Cable 60 cm or 90 cm: practical guide to choosing the right length

When choosing a Key-Bak retractable key holder, the cord length is often the last criterion you consider. You focus on the model, the attachment, the number of items to carry, and the cord length is decided almost by default. This is a common mistake because this detail has a real impact on everyday comfort.

A cable that's too short forces you to get closer to each reader, lock or interlocutor. A cable that's too long trails, snags, and ends up hindering movement. Neither is ideal. Here's how to make the right choice from the start.

choosing the cable length for your keybak

What the cable length really changes

The length of the cable determines how far you can reach with your badge or key without unhooking the reel or moving. It really is that simple.

However, this distance will vary depending on several factors: the height at which the reel is attached to your uniform, the position of the badge readers or locks you use, and how you move throughout your workday. What is comfortable for a tall person attaching their reel to their belt may not be comfortable for a shorter person with it attached to their chest pocket.

The cable length is therefore not an absolute figure. It is a variable that depends on your specific configuration.

60 cm cable: for close use and fixed stations

A 60 cm cable is suitable for situations where access points are close and relatively fixed. It is the standard length for the majority of common professional uses.

This is the right choice when:

You work in a fixed or semi-fixed position, such as a reception desk, cash register, or office, where the badge reader is always in the same place and at a predictable distance. You wear your reel on your belt or waist, and the locks or readers you use are at hand height or slightly higher. You have quick and repeated use where the cable needs to return to its position quickly without trailing. Your working environment is compact and the distances between two access points are short.

This is typically the length recommended for a hotel receptionist, a cashier in a supermarket, a nurse who scans his badge at fixed terminals, or a security guard at an entrance control point.

The 90 cm cable: for mobile use and varied configurations

A 90 cm cable offers greater freedom of movement. It is made for situations where the distance between yourself and the access point is variable, unpredictable, or larger than normal.

This is the right choice when:

You are constantly moving in a large space such as an industrial building, warehouse or large hospital, and badge readers or locks are at varying heights and distances. You wear your retractable reel high on your torso, on a chest pocket or a vest, which mechanically moves the attachment point away from hand-height locks. You work outdoors or in environments where obstacles sometimes force you to reach further than expected. Your keyring is heavy and you prefer to have some slack in the cable to handle it comfortably without tugging on the mechanism.

This is typically the recommended length for a caretaker who opens dozens of doors a day in a large establishment, a maintenance technician who works on equipment at various heights, a hospital worker who moves between several buildings, or an outdoor professional who attaches their retractable reel to a backpack or harness.

The impact of the fixing position on the choice of length

This is the most underestimated factor when choosing cable length, and yet it's often the one that makes the difference.

If you are setting your Key-Bak SUPER48 or your ORIGINAL At waist height, approximately 90 cm from the ground for an average person, a 60 cm cable allows you to comfortably reach a reader situated between 30 and 150 cm from the ground. This is sufficient for the vast majority of standard configurations.

If you fix your reel to a chest pocket, at about 130 or 140 cm from the ground, a 60 cm cable only allows you to reach points between 70 and 190 cm. For a low lock or a hand-level reader, you will need to get closer or lower yourself slightly. In this case, a 90 cm cable offers more convenience.

The rule of thumb is simple: the higher your anchor point is on your body, the longer a cable you will benefit from choosing.

Some typical configurations to guide the choice

Hotel receptionist, belt fixation, badge reader at counter height 60 cm cable.

Nurse in a smock, chest pocket clip, variable height time clocks. 90 cm cable.

Security guard, tactical belt attachment, outdoor badge and key use: 90 cm cable for greater freedom of movement.

Retail cashier, belt fixation, integrated scanner at the till: 60 cm cable.

Maintenance technician, belt fixing, access to technical cabinets and rooms: 90 cm cable.

Hotel maintenance worker, belt fastening, repeated opening of room doors: 60 cm cable if the locks are at standard height, 90 cm if the establishment has varied configurations.

Professional outdoor, attachment to backpack or harness. 90 cm cable.

And if we still hesitate

When in doubt, it's better to choose the longer cable. A 90 cm cable on a device that only needed 60 cm is slightly less compact but still perfectly usable. A 60 cm cable on a device that needed 90 cm forces uncomfortable daily adjustments that eventually become irritating.

The cable length is not irreversible either. The range of’Key-Bak accessories proposes options for adapting certain configurations after purchase. And if you are equipping an entire team, it may be useful to test both lengths on a few workstations before placing a bulk order.
